Three ways to build valuable relationships

We’re all in the relationship business. While it’s really obvious in sales, it matters for everyone. Whether you’re in sales, marketing, operations, ?nance or technology, successful people are those who can create, maintain and grow their internal and external relationships. We use relationships to achieve our goals, move projects along and expand our business. Here are three ways to build and grow your relationships.

  1. Make a Plan – Successful people spend time planning out their goals and objectives for their life, their business, or their projects. Long term planning for the future means ?guring out people you want and need to have in your life. Then make it a point to meet them either in the short, medium, or long term, and make each others lives a little bit better for it. When you surround yourself with the right people and build real relationships with them, your goals will come to you with much less effort. Yes, there will be amazing accidental meetings that will change your life, but a bit of planning goes a long way.
  2. Giving is greater than receiving – Many people only reach out to their contacts
when they need something. People feel much more compelled to help those who have helped them in the past. It takes very little effort to think through your network and ?nd someone each day or week to help. Sometimes a great way to help someone is to proactively connect with someone else you know they would have a hard time otherwise meeting.
  3. Lest we forget – Everyone has heard the mantra that it’s easier to keep an existing
customer than to win a new one. The same rule applies to great people. Organize yourself well enough to ensure that you keep in contact periodically with your valuable relationships and never let them feel like you have forgotten about them. Although in your mind you may still care about them, if you haven’t let them know in the last year that you were thinking about them or made them feel special in some way, why should they prioritize you among their most valuable relationships.

Relationships are one of the things we all value most among the things that we have in our life. Paying attention to who you choose to bring into your life, what you can do for them, and how to make them feel special is as important. Itss certainly as important to make a part of your thought processes as any other of the material things we go after every day.
