1. Emotions make marketing stronger

Marketers and business leaders who tap into their emotions may have an easier time building trust, loyalty, commitment, productivity, and innovation at their organizations. Wow—that’s a lot of positive outcomes just from getting in touch with your feelings.

The trouble is, most of us are afraid to express our emotions. But one this we learned at SMPS Southeast was that leadership (and your audience) demands it. In fact, emotional intelligence is foundational for effective leadership.

As Keynote speaker Dr. Pat Baxter put it, if you want to propel your marketing into the future, you’ve first got to get a little vulnerable.

2. Innovation Depends on Analytical and Creative Thinking

If you want to ignite the fire of innovation at your organization, you’re going to have to use your brain—both the left (creative) and right (analytical) sides.

Speaker Sue Mosby pointed out that while feeding your creativity in a content-heavy world can be a challenge for busy marketers and business leaders in the AEC industry and beyond, it’s not insurmountable. She recommended utilizing a process, toolset, mindset, and skillset to close innovation gaps.

3. Creativity Requires More than Splashy Graphics

While it can be easy for marketers to fall into the trap of relying on a snazzy interface or eye-catching design to do the heavy lifting, at SMPS Southeast, we were reminded that a great story is still king.

And as Julie Shaffer, Jan Flesher, and Chaz Ross-Munro pointed out, telling a compelling story requires first requires a deep understanding of your client, and the ability to communicate value at every stage.
